Irish Proverb 318 - Seanfhocail Ghaeilge 318

Is é seo Seanfhocal an Lae:

Today's Proverb is:

Marbh le tae agus marbh gan é.

Seo ciall an tseanfhocail:

The translation or meaning is:

Dead with tea, dead without it.

An bhfuil a mhalairt de thuairim agat maidir le ciall an tseanfhocail seo, nó ar mhaith leat an t-aistriúchán s’agatsa a roinnt linn? Déan caint ar seo thíos.

Languages always reflect culture, so it is perhaps unsurprising that here in the land of Mrs Doyle, tea is regarded as a boundless, life-jacking source of pleasure and vexation rather than men. Gwan, gwan, gwan, gwan, GWAN!

I'm just back from Ciorcal Gaeilge in the village. The three locals present agreed it should be marbh le té agus marbh gan é, té meaning person. Would you agree?

I think the locals are pulling your leg, a chara! If you Google the two versions, I think you'll find that the score in favour of tea is about 15000 to nothing.

Go raibh mile maith agat. I hope leg-pulling helps to not only extend the leg but also the knowledge, haha.

Or perhaps in that particular Gaeltacht they have an unusually intense love/hate relationship with their spouses!
