    Re: Fáilte/Welcome

    Hi Lads

Am glad there is a few novices on here as I am one of the same clan!

Am based in London, but go home most summers to the very heart of the Donegal Gaeltacht but can only manage a few isolated sentances in Irish, to my shame! Both my parents were fluent in Gaelic but I've forgetton most of it from when I was young.

Am looking forward to learning again, although I know it will be tough going

    Cheers

    Denis Boyle

    Fáilte chuig Labhair Gaeilge, Denis!

If you had some Irish growing up, you're probably ahead of us who had none! You were lucky having parents who were fluent.

I don't think you should worry about learning being tough - it's probably going to be a lot easier than you think - and you probably will remember a lot when you get going.

Give this wee word game a go anois - agus ádh mór ort!

Jesus Michelle I feel like I've been tossed right into the deep end!

I have to go back to basics, am completly lost! Am having a look at the BBC NI website and found a useful one called www.eirefirst.com . Am going to see my Da later to brush up, he speaks Irish so fast, he'd make your head spin!

Would it be an idea to record him speaking Irish and post it on here? Obviously he speaks the Ulster dialect as we 're Donegal

    Re: Fáilte/Welcome

I'm trying to get my French back as well as learn Irish for the first time, so I know how you feel - believe me! Maybe you'll some stuff is much easier when you go back to basics, because it is coming back to you. This is like French for me. I studied it for 5 years at school and then lost it. Now I'm learning both French and Irish. The French is easier, because I find it coming back to me. But with my Irish, I'm learning everything for the first time, so I'm finding it that bit harder. I'll have a look at eirefirst.com too and see what it's like!

    Le gach dea ghuí!

    Dear all,

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am in the beginner's stage of learning the Irish language. I have had minimal exposure to the language, but starting Monday I will be taking elementary Irish at my university (for a grade!!!) I figure I need all the help I can get.lol. I love the culture and the music; this forum should dove-tail nicely with my class.

    Cordially yours,

    Julie

Fáilte chuig Labhair Gaeilge (welcome to Talk Irish)!

It would be great if you could keep us updated on your class - or maybe post some information on where your class is and how useful you find it in our section for learning Irish in your country (if your country isn't there, we can create a new section for you!).

I'm starting a class in Belfast soon - I'll be posting about that!

ádh mór ort (good luck on you)

    Re: Fáilte/Welcome

Dia duit.  I am a novice at irish galic. what got me started was I reasontly found out that the person i have been calling grandma is realy my great grandma. she took my dad away from his mom and changed his last name. his last name before my great grandma changed it was McCollough.  Sence i found out I have been trying to learn whare I came from. my dad makes this hard because even to ask about my celtic past (both irish and scotish) is like trying to pull teeth. I can't see or talk to my dad's dad because my dad will not let me. he won't let me because my dad and my dad's dad disagree.  I also have a dream to one day live in iriland and It would be nice to have a working nolige of the irish galic when I do.

Fáilte go chuig Labhair Gaeilge (welcome to Talk Irish). I hope you find the site useful for learning Irish. Check out the word a day blog to get started. There's a whole lot you can learn about Ireland and the Irish language, so don't be in a rush...did you learn anything more about your name? I found this information on www.ancestry.com

    McCullough
Irish (especially Ulster): Anglicized form of the Gaelic surname Mac Cú Uladh, a patronymic from Cú Uladh ‘hound of Ulster’.

It looks to me (but I'm not sure at all!) that the name McCullough might be related to the Cú Chulainn myths...do you know anything about him? You can get an introduction at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuchulain

Dia duit a keltplast!  I have a better idea, why don't you come to the states and I'll adopt you and you can teach me Irish! lol

Seriously though, I vote for your recordings!!  I think that would be such a great help to those of us who are beginners to

be able to hear the words pronounced. So you have my vote! (BIG SMILE)   And since I started out learning the Ulster

dialect, that would fit right in with my learning. lol

    Slán,

    Kay

    Re: Fáilte/Welcome

I can't seem to find them anywhere Denis, but to be honest, I'm still trying to find my way around this site.

I had NO idea that the Irish language could be so hard! When I first starting learning from the programs

Giota Beag and Giota Beag Eile I thought..oh this is a breeze. Then I moved onto Colin and Cumberland

and still I thought ..WOW  I'm really kicking it!  And then I started reading emails from fluent speakers.

HAHAHA , I really got kicked with that one!  Found out it wasn't as easy as I thought. But it's such a beautiful

language and it's a part of my heritage so I'm hanging in there. (Wish me lots of luck!)

Anyway, I'll keep checking to see if she gets them uploaded. Go raibh míle maith agat for getting them

    for us!!

    Slán

    Re: Fáilte/Welcome

    Dia daoibh a chairde,

I've just joined the clan and am looking forward to using this site - the word of the day is excellent! I'm an absolute beginner, and I'm taking classes at a school in Madrid, Spain. My boyfriend is Irish, so I've been curious about the language for as long as I've known him. He only speaks a bit as he's forgotten most, but he helps me a lot and so his irish is getting better too!

Just a question, how do I write the fadas in the messages? I tried to write it in word and cut and paste, but it gave me an entire page of weird code...

Slan (I know there should be a fada on the a, just can't get it there!!!)

    Tora, Madrid

Fáilte chuig Labhair Gaeilge! I hope you find it useful. I'm glad you like the word a day service Smile

    Go raibh maith agat Michelle,

I think the problem is my browser - I use Firefox and sometimes it won't pick up fadas etc. I'll keep working on it...
