    Irish Keyboard on an iPhone

I am wanting to text in Irish to my friends but my iPhone doesn't have the capabilities to use fadas and the International Keyboards don't include an Irish keyboard.

Any ideas on another language that uses similar letters or some other way to get around this?  I have tried copying and pasting the letters from another program but the recipients can't see the "offending" letters.

Any help or ideas are appreciated!

    Go raibh maith agaibh!

I got my answer - Go raibh maith agaibh!

If you hold down the vowel that you want a fada on, it will bring up a selection of accents to use on the letter.  Apparently, the issue was on the receipents' ends -- their phones could not "read" the fada vowels.

Hopefully this helps other people who use an iPhone :)

Thanks a million for that - I got my iphone recently and that question was bugging me. It would be nice if there was a keyboard option as well though - sliding your finger across to get the right accent is a little tedious. The Wii has it cracked nicely - you can select a keyboard option with the character and accent. There is certainly a market for an app on this!

Re: Irish Keyboard on an iPhone

I'm afraid I'm quite a fan of Apple's solution - I sometimes text in Irish and in French - and what I love is that I don't have to fiddle about between keyboards to write a text as Gaeilge or en Francais. But I am TOTALLY enraged by the autocorrect. It's a nightmare. Any tips?

All you have to do is go into keyboards and set up multiple keyboards (for the languages you want (I have French, UK English and Arabic keyboards enabled and the default language of my iPhone is Irish).....then the autocorrect works across languages. Very handly for filling in "aujourd'***" as soon as you've got to auj...:-)

No idea why aujourd ' *** is coming out as a series of asterisks on this site, though!

Go raibh maith agat, Cúla búla.

On my iPhone 3GS I went into Settings - General - Keyboard

I could select a French keyboard - great. But there was no Irish keyboard! How did you get it?

There is no Irish keyboard or Irish autocorrect.

I’ve spent over 4 hours on recent days with Apple support to prove to them that their Irish language option was not functional. Finally having reviewed all my settings, reset my phone to factory settings under their instruction they volunteered the confirmation that the French language keyboard support was more extensive than the Irish keyboard. I could eventually insist that the support section formally request that their engineers review the software.

It is possible to provide further feedback on the issue to Apple by selecting iphone feedback on the Apple site. For any iphone users out there who feel strongly enough on the subject.

Can't you just press the letter and wait for the special characters screen to come up on the English keyboard?
