Are you on PC? If so, European PC keyboards usually have a key to the right of the spacebar, which is labelled "Alt Gr". You hold this key down and hit any other vowel to get a fada over the vowel. Simplest way I know to make a fada on a PC keyboard (and you shouldn't have to do any other set-up on your machine).

I live in the U.S., so it's just a regular alt key here.  My friend who uses the same screen reader I do says I'll have to memorize the Ascii characters, and gave me the Jaws shortcut to do it.

I followed your directions and was pleased to find that it did work...but only for the á.   Ctrl + Alt + e gives me the euro symbol and Ctrl + Alt+ i/o/u doesn't do anything.

    Help?

Oh, and my netbook doesn't have a separate dedicated numeric set of keys.

Hi, Nadine,   I live in Canada and use PC.  I hold down the ctrl key and tap the apostrophe key, then release the ctrl key and type the vowel I want to wear the fada. It doesn't work in these comment boxes, but it does work in my emails, Word documents, and open office documents.  funny it doesn't work in these comment boxes, though.

I look outside and see it is calm.  Using Microsoft office word, I can type, copy and paste into the comment box:

Tá an oíche go breá anseo.

It means having Microsoft Office Word or some other word processing program on, but it can make fadas possible in your posts here.

That's great!  A terrific discovery!  And I also discovered that it works on all the capital letters.  Just hold down CTRL and tap the apostrophe ' key, then hold down SHIFT and tap the vowel key.

Too bad it doesn't work here, but it works great in Word; also works in Outlook.

Go raibh maith agat, a Bhob!
