    Re: Irish Language Practice

Michelle, you are awesome. You are brilliant starting this thread. I also wanted to let you know that I admire your effort to keep this language alive. I heard not many Irish people speak Irish anymore. Am I correct?

I am looking for someone who can tease me and laugh at my Irish pronunciations and intonations, especially that "rrrrr" sound, and have patients to teach me until I get them right. Audio helps but I want to be sure that I'm saying them right and surprise native speakers when I take a trip to Ireland. A couple of ideas I could come up with so far are on the webcam or find a native speaker who lives near me, which is middle of nowhere, Alberta, Canada.

Here's a little bit about me; I am Japanese who is losing her native language Sad, my name means fortunate / blessed - same as my arias, almost (in two days) 44 year-old kid, carpenter / cook / musician - so I have fairly good ears, loves kids and animals - I have this “catch-and-release-bug policy" except those stupid mosquitoes and flies, I am not religious but spiritual, locals call me Japanese Redneck Red-hair - they tell me I’ve got an Irish temper… If you read what I have posted in the forums on this site, you’ll get more ideas about me as well.

‘Go raibh maith agat’ in advance Smile

    Dia duit!

Fiona is ainm dom. I have been wanting to learn Irish Gaelic for a long time! I would love to practice reading and writing in Gaelic by email with someone if anyone's interested. My sister is learning Welsh so that doesn't help me at all! When people meet me for the first time they think I really am from Ireland. Sadly, that is not true. I love anything to do with the Irish culture (especially the music and language). I am hopefully going to visit Ireland after college and go to the Gaelic speaking areas so I would love to learn some before I go! I am a beginner, mostly learning from songs in Gaelic and books, CDs, software whatever I can find! I would love to become fluent! If anybody can explain the reasoning and logic behind the h silent and not silent pronunciations that would be great! I know how to pronounce them, I just don't know when you pronounce it as a w or as a v sound. I hope that makes sense. Go raibh maith agat!

    Slán, Fiona

    Re: Irish Language Practice

Dia duit Brian! Tá mé go maith, go raibh maith agat! I already have one penpal correspondence going. I don't know how many I could keep up with since I am going back to college soon to New Orleans. I am new to this whole penpal thing. I'm just starting to write in Gaelic so it'll probably take me a while to answer you. I've just started learning Gaelic this year but nobody around me speaks it so it has been difficult trying to teach myself. I do know some French as well because I grew up hearing it so I do have a good ear for languages. :)

    Slán go fóill,

    Fiona

Hi folks, I'm going to put a few words of Irish on here, saying what I am doing and where I am. Maybe others would like to put a couple of sentences on?

Cad é mar atá sibh, a chairde? Tá mise i mo shuí anseo sa seomra suí (nó seomra suite más fearr libh sin) i mo theach i mBéal Feirste. Níl an lá iontach deas. Tá sé scamallach inniu. Tá an fómhar ag teacht! Is féidir liom Beann Mhadagáin (Cave Hill) a fheiceáil ón áit a bhfuil mé. Tá boladh deas sa teach. Tá cillí feola nó chilli con carne ar an sorn. Beimid ag ithe ar a seacht ach tá ocras orm cheana féin!

Tá an ghrian ag soilsiú inniu i Alberta. (not sure where “i Alberta” is supposed to fit.) Tá fómhar beagnach críochnaithe! (Wanted to use the form “Tá an fómhar ag...”) Tá an geimhreadh ag teacht!

Thig liom an Chilli con Carne a bolaigh sa teach an Seano. Tá ocras orm anois!

Tá sibh go maith leis an teanga. Is mise Roibeárd agus tá mé i mo chonaí i mBaile Átha Cliath. Níl an lá ana-mhaith ag an am sin ach beidh sé tirim ar feadh an lá. Is maith liom a bheith ag foghlaim gaelige. Rachaidh mé go dtí Conradh na Gaelige anocht agug ag leamh leabhar faoi staire na h-Éireann. Is maith liom an cluiche sacar agus chonaich mé Manchester United ag bualeadh Arsenal inné. Tá suim agam ar an amhairclainne agus is minic a d'fhreastail mé an drama.

    Slan go fóilín,

    Roibeárd
