Hi I'm new to this forum buisness so I hope I'm doing this right. I've often wondered about a quick and causual way to say Hi without using "hello" or "hi" and because I'm not religous, (a fan of Richard Dawkings) Dia Dhuit isn't an option, and I dont like greeting with a "how are you". This I have pondered for a while, any ideas anyone? Cheers..

I was at a meeting last night in which I was asked to lead the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Afterwards, I was curious how the pledge would read in Irish. I suspect it has probably been done before, but I thought I would take a crack at it, just for fun. Here's what I came up with (English version first):

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Tugaim gealtanas don bhratach Na Stát Aontaithe Mheiriceá, agus is comhartha ar an Phoblacht, is aon naisiún amháin é, faoi Dia, doroinnte, le saoirse agus ceart ar dhuine ar bith

Hello all, possible war cry?

Obviously new here. I recently found my family crest in some of my grandfathers items that were previously missing. I'm glad to have found it, however at the bottom of the crest, are the words attached. I put "Lamh" in a gaelic translator and the word hand returns. Abu, did not return with anything, and just doing a random search, saw it might be a war cry of some sort. I can't find the middle word anywhere.

Appreciate the help in advance. If it helps grandfather is O'neal.

I can't remember what you said.

"é" vs "sé". We have " Cuir sé ar an tábla".

Put it in the table. However, we have,

"Cad é mar atá tú ?" How us it with you?

How do you know when to use "é" and when

you're suppose to use "sé" when referring

to "it" ?

Irish Keyboard on an iPhone

I am wanting to text in Irish to my friends but my iPhone doesn't have the capabilities to use fadas and the International Keyboards don't include an Irish keyboard.

Any ideas on another language that uses similar letters or some other way to get around this? I have tried copying and pasting the letters from another program but the recipients can't see the "offending" letters.

Any help or ideas are appreciated!

Why Irish? I fell in love with Irish music (Clannad) and then I discovered the language that goes with it. I lived in Tokyo for sixteen years and made five trips to Ireland in all. (At one stage I was teaching Irish to Japanese students at a private language school in Tokyo.) Now I sing songs in Irish and play uilleann pipes here in Oz.

If you use a Mac, you can hold down the Option key and type ‘e’. An accent will appear without a letter. You can now type the vowel you need. If you need a capital letter, hold down the Shift key.

Examples

Opt + E, u = ú

Opt + E, Shift + u = Ú

Conditional Sentence Structure

Not sure who will have this question within their grasp...but I am just trying to verify something.

I have been going through the Duolingo course, and, in going through the second level on Conditional Verbs, noticed that a sentence such as "If I had money I would put it in the bank" is translated as "Dá mbeadh airgead agam chuirfinn é sa bhanc."

In that translation, the "If I had.." part is translated with the conditional verb "mbeadh" instead of the regular "bhí". Is this correct, that in a conditional sentence the verbs in all parts of the sentence should agree?

Just want to make sure I am understanding this concept.

Hello! I'm looking to get a tattoo in Irish. I want to use the phrase "unexpected warrior." Would "laoch gan choinne" be the correct translation? I don't know if there is a feminine/masculine distinction with the word laoch, but since I am a lass I thought I would ask that as well. Thank you! 🍀

Trying to see if anyone remembers an old black and white Tarzan film (or possibly serial episode) where someone purporting to speak to African natives yells a few of the old cupla focal instead....

Any ideas? My Mam swears she remembers it.

Croía / Croíagh?

Hi. I'd love some fluent Irish speakers to give me their option on something.

My name is Crea. I've been told it's an ancient Wexford name. I've been trying to find reference to it in any old texts for about 30 years but I cant (it has since made its way into books & baby name websites). Obviously, in Irish, it wouldn't be spelled CREA so I've guessed it should be spelled Croía or Croíagh.

Have any of you heard of my name or read about it in old texts? And more importantly, should it be spelled Croía or Croíagh? And what would it translate to; would it be 'of the heart', ''from the heart' or what?

Any help would be great.

I am trying to learn how to put sentences together. So hang in there with me , le do thoil. Now to say..It's late, I'm going to bed. I know it's late would be..tá sé mall, however, I'm going to bed throws me. I have the...Tá mé ag dul (I'm going ) part, but not sure on how to say ..'to' luí. The "to" is throwing me.
