Hi, small potato, welcome to the forum (fáilte romhat ar an fóram).

One the site's home page, click on Forum. Scroll down the page to find links to the four separate forum categories, General, Buntús Cainte, Irish Books & CDs, Irish Grammar. Click on the link for the forum that best matches what you want to write about for the occasion. Once in that forum, you will see a link near the top of the forum page to "Write a New Post". Click on that link and a new entry page will open up. Write your item, then click on the Post button at the bottom.

I had to hunt around a while myself when I first started in this forum, so I understand the frustration with finding this feature, but it is designed to keep the posts segregated into the four categories.

all Irish keyboard type the fada by simply typing Ctrl+Alt. That’s a “hidden feature”, I agree, but many people seem to be able to do it. If you’re changing the keyboard layout, you would have to “guess” which keys map to other keys. I think that’s the complication of re-mapping layouts, right?

I think there is a simple work around in Office (certainly MS Word)

In MS Word

1. Click on Insert menu at top

2. Click on symbols

3. Check that normal txt font is selected from drop down menu

4. A grid of symbols should be on screen

5. Select á for example

6. Select keyboard shortcut

7. In box called 'enter keyboard shortcut' type ctrl + a (in this example)

8. SCreen should now show that ctrl + a will type á

9. Press ASSIGN (otherwise shortcut is not stored)

10. Do same for other fadas . . . agus sin sin.

Which keys exactly? All you need to do is have the system keyboard and operating system set to Ireland and then use alt+desired vowel. It doesn't work if british has slipped in somewhere.

Even this does not work out for me too. Iam using Mac osx and in microsoft word document it is not showing anything, if I use these keys.

Actually, there's a much easier way to use the fadas on Mac OS X. I do this with the French accent marks, and it works for Gaelic, too. All you have to do is go to the "edit" drop down menu in safari or text edit (the Mac's built-in word processing program) and select "special characters". It allows you to build a menu of favorites from all of the special characters from all of the menus available to you. The Gaelic accents are in the menu labelled "Accented Latin letters". All you have to do to select the accented letters needed for proper Gaelic spelling is to go to that letter, then click the button that looks like a gear at the bottom left hand corner of the box, which will give you the option to add that letter to your favorites list. Click it, and that will add that character, and its accent mark, to your list of favorites. Continue to compile your list of favorites until you have all of the necessary Irish letters with the fadas. Then, just click the button called "favorites" in the bar at the top of the "special characters" section, and it will show all of the letters you've selected as favorites. Then, before you're going to type a message in Gaelic, just pull down the "special characters" menu, and make sure that you're selected "favorites". The box will stay open on your desktop while you type stuff, so you can just go to it any time that you need to type a letter with a fada. Select the letter you want, then just click the "insert" button, and the letter will be wherever you want. The box won't go away just because you've clicked on it, so it will stay as long as you want, and you can use as many fadas as you need, & this way is much easier. I'm also going to post a message about how to use the fadas on your Blackberry, because I've just figured out how to do that, and I thought people here might like to know that. None of this stuff is as complicated as it seems, and you don't need a special app on your Blackberry to get either the French or Irish accent marks. My next post will tell you how to use both of them easily without any special apps.

In order for the alt+vowel trick to give an accented vowel, the operating system must be set to "Ireland" in sys prefs/international and the keyboard set to ireland/Irish.. If it set to an Anglophone version such as the United Kingdom or the USA, then it will not work. It is a Mac OSX hidden extra for Irish users. For those normally typing in English, a British keyboard may be ticked as well.

Not sure if this works for everyone but im on a Mac too (Mac OS X) and i just have to hold the "Alt" button then press the vowel i want to put a fada on.

I'm a Mac user as well, and I use the Mac version of Microsoft Word. The Opt + E trick does work for me.
