Hi I'm new to this forum buisness so I hope I'm doing this right. I've often wondered about a quick and causual way to say Hi without using "hello" or "hi" and because I'm not religous, (a fan of Richard Dawkings) Dia Dhuit isn't an option, and I dont like greeting with a "how are you". This I have pondered for a while, any ideas anyone? Cheers..

I was at a meeting last night in which I was asked to lead the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Afterwards, I was curious how the pledge would read in Irish. I suspect it has probably been done before, but I thought I would take a crack at it, just for fun. Here's what I came up with (English version first):

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Tugaim gealtanas don bhratach Na Stát Aontaithe Mheiriceá, agus is comhartha ar an Phoblacht, is aon naisiún amháin é, faoi Dia, doroinnte, le saoirse agus ceart ar dhuine ar bith

Hi I’m trying to write a short story in Irish and have found a difficulty understanding where and when de and na are used.

I specifically incorporated the phrase life of freedom into my story and can’t establish whether it’s saol na saoirse or saol de saoirse, and how that works

Can anyone give me some advice on lenition etc for nicknames? My kids camp are encouraging them to come up with some. My fella is Mícheál, so he wants to use 'Mícheál Maorga', would that be correct? Would 'maorga' change depending on the preceding name? GRMMA for any and all help/suggestions!!

Obviously new here. I recently found my family crest in some of my grandfathers items that were previously missing. I'm glad to have found it, however at the bottom of the crest, are the words attached. I put "Lamh" in a gaelic translator and the word hand returns. Abu, did not return with anything, and just doing a random search, saw it might be a war cry of some sort. I can't find the middle word anywhere.

Appreciate the help in advance. If it helps grandfather is O'neal.

I am looking to make a sign with a word or phrase to describe the following.... translated to irish / Gaelic.

- Courage

- Moving Forward

- toughness and perseverence

- Something having to do with pushing forward despite what life has thrown at you.

I am not sure what direction I want to go in with the sign whether it is a translation to the above phrases or topics.. or if there is an irish saying that I can incorporate that means something similar.

Hello all. I'm currently hoping someone can assist me with a translation. The starting text is "Justia et Fortitudo Invincibilia Sunt" which translates to "Justice and Fortitude Are Invincible." What I'm hoping to do is get this phrase, or the closest possible translation in Irish. I'm very distrustful of google translate so I was hoping someone with more experience coulde help me here. Greetings all! I have a translation favor to ask, please. My mom and dad's house has a faded, old address wall plate that I'd like to replace with a new one for them. My mom's from Co Kerry; dad from Galway. But I grew up in the US (and don't speak Irish). The parents once lived in a neighborhood of NYC years ago called, 'Bay Ridge', which is in NYC's borough of Brooklyn. On their house address wall plate, they dubbed the home, 'Bay Ridge House'. It was written in English. For the new address wall plate I want to surprise them with, I'd like to have that written in Irish. I did some of my own, clumsy, uneducated research; and, came up with the following Irish translation: 'Teach Dromainn Os Cionn Na Ba'. Could someone knowledgeable please tell me if that is the correct or best translation, please?? I would greatly appreciate help. Thank you so much!!! ---Kevin

"é" vs "sé". We have " Cuir sé ar an tábla".

Put it in the table. However, we have,

"Cad é mar atá tú ?" How us it with you?

How do you know when to use "é" and when

you're suppose to use "sé" when referring

to "it" ?

Collins Irish Grammar error?

in this grammar book it lists "ní bhrisfidh tú na rialacha aris" as being an example of the negative particle "ní" used in the present tense. it is translated as " you will not break the rules again". certainly this is an example of the future tense and not the present. "ní bhriseann tú na rialacha aris" - you don't break the rules again would be the statement in the present tense. isn't this true?

I am wanting to text in Irish to my friends but my iPhone doesn't have the capabilities to use fadas and the International Keyboards don't include an Irish keyboard.

Any ideas on another language that uses similar letters or some other way to get around this? I have tried copying and pasting the letters from another program but the recipients can't see the "offending" letters.

Any help or ideas are appreciated!

Dia daoibh!

I'm a French translator and music student, and I've recently started learning Irish. I was thinking about getting an Irish language buddy, which is a great way to improve, but then a friend of mine told me that she was translating Russian poetry with the help of a Russian friend (who provides a "rough translation" in French, which my friend improves). I'm very interested in Irish poetry, which I can't, unfortunately, understand at the moment (I can barely explain where I live!). But I am keen on discovering it, and I was wondering if anyone would like to pair up with me to do the same... Ideally someone who knows French to a certain extent, but if need be we can use English as a bridge (not ideal for translation, but hey, translation is never perfect anyway!). Of course, I'm also interested in a "regular" Irish buddy, we could do both. :) We could also try to translate French poetry into Irish if someone's into it. Anyone? :)
